Update 11:50am 23 Nov.: The Cayman Islands Fire Service has turned over monitoring of the hotspots at the George Town landfill to the Department of Environmental Health, the latest update from Government Information Services stated Tuesday morning.
Some Fire Service equipment, GIS said, remains in place at the landfill as a precaution.
Original story: The Cayman Islands Fire Service is expected to make assessment on Tuesday on the way forward after three days of continued monitoring of hot spots at the George Town landfill.
Fire fighters, according to an update from Government Information Services Monday night, were using a thermal imaging camera to monitor the areas of interest at the landfill.
Damping operations have ceased for now and there are currently no naked flames, the update stated.
However GIS said a number of areas emitting steam have been identified.
“The Department of Environmental Health has been covering and leveling these areas, as they are discovered,” it said.
Fire fighters have been at the landfill since the steam was sighted at 6:46pm Friday and engaged in damping down operations after hot spots were identified.
The situation is said to currently pose no threat to the public.
