A small fire at the George Town landfill on Wednesday 3 June was extinguished by firefighters and site staff, the Department of Environmental Health has said.

A spokeswoman said the surface fire broke out on the north side of the sprawling site off the Esterley Tibbetts Highway and was detected through routine monitoring.

She added that firefighters attended the scene and department staff covered and compacted the area of the fire.

The spokeswoman said the situation was handled “swiftly” and that there had been no risk to people, property or the environment.

“Crew remain on site to monitor the area and ensure no re-ignition occurs.”

The latest fire came just a month after a similar small blaze at the controversial site.

Fire broke out at the site on 1 May, just two weeks after a major blaze erupted at the site.

The fire service deployed a full-size truck and a smaller rapid intervention vehicle to the scene, which broke out at the opposite side of the dump from the major fire in April, which caused large-scale disruption and sent clouds of smoke billowing over the surrounding area.
