Firefighters were still monitoring the George Town landfill Thursday morning, as “light smoke” continued to emanate from the site, the Cayman Islands Fire Service confirmed.

The Fire Service will remain at the site “until further notice”, according to a spokesperson.

Fire crews have been at the landfill since Sunday when they tackled a fire, reported to be 100 feet in diameter.

On Thursday morning, the firefighters carried out an assessment at the landfill where they identified “an additional area of concern emitting light smoke from five additional spots”.

The spokesperson said regular assessments would be conducted and damping operations will continue to ensure there are no flare-ups.
