Cayman Islands Fire Service crews are currently battling a fire – reported to be 100 feet in diameter – at the George Town landfill, Hazard Management Cayman Islands has confirmed.

HMCI, in a brief post on its social media pages Sunday, 5 Dec., said firefighters are on scene working to extinguish the fire and will have fire appliances stationed overnight.

Thick smoke could be seen rising from the landfill from the Esterley Tibbetts Highway.

HMCI stated in its post that “the smoke from the fire does not pose an issue at this time”.

Motorists are advised to use caution when driving in the area, as visibility may be reduced at times.
