In a match that looked almost certain to end goalless, Elite SC scored just before the full-time whistle blew, to defeat Fusion SC 1-0 on Sunday, 30 Jan. in the Cayman Islands Football Association Women’s League.

Elite dominated possession throughout the match and, eventually, defensive midfielder Deondra Kelly capitalised for her team with a goal in the 85th minute.

“It was a really tough game from start to finish and the weather didn’t help much,” Kelly, who is team captain, told the Cayman Compass after the match.

“It was a pleasure to put that chance away to help my team win.”

While Elite won the game by a single goal, the team squandered several opportunities, missing over 20 times against their opposition. Kelly, who previously played for Fusion, said her team wasn’t on form, but a win was a win.

“Today wasn’t our day to finish all the opportunities we had,” she said.

“In the first half, we probably had 15 shots at the goal… and most of the game we played in their half. I guess the consistent pressure and work ethic allowed us to get the breakthrough goal.”

Second place Elite will play league leader Sunset FC on Sunday, 6 Feb. at 3:30 pm at the Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay.
