Lavender cocktails and carnations to mark World Cancer Month

Lavender is the colour associated with awareness of all types of cancer.

Bars and restaurants throughout Cayman are helping to raise cancer awareness, as well as funds, for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, by offering lavender cocktails throughout the month of February, which is World Cancer Month.

Lavender is the awareness colour for all cancers, much as pink is the colour associated with breast cancer or gold with childhood cancer.

During the ‘Lavender on the Rocks’ campaign, several participating restaurants will be offering lavender-coloured or flavoured cocktails to customers. The restaurants include Cracked Conch, Ms. Piper’s, Saltwater Grill, The Boathouse, Next Door, The Falls Steakhouse, Backroom, Tillies and La Casita. Jacques Scott is offering discounts to the participating restaurants, organisers said.

As well as lavender cocktails that will be available all month long, on 4 Feb. – World Cancer Day – the Cayman Islands Cancer Society will be setting up pop-up shops where people can buy lavender carnations for a minimum donation of $2 to show their support.

In a statement, the Cayman Islands Cancer Society said, “World Cancer Day is Friday, 4th February 2022, but we are encouraging schools, businesses and churches to raise funds throughout the whole month of February.

“In the last three years, the Cancer Society has provided over $1 million in financial aid to cancer patients in our community. In 2022, the CICS will celebrate its 27th anniversary so please, please help us to help others this year in any way you can.”

People can mark World Cancer Month in a variety of ways throughout February.

The Cancer Society is inviting people to mark World Cancer Awareness Day in their own ways, and raise money by lighting up their premises in lavender; having a dress-down day at the office; organising a coffee morning, a pot luck dinner or a bake-off; having a book sale; running a raffle; having a quiz night; or even placing a swear jar in the office, and then donating the money raised to the charity.

World Cancer Awareness Day is a global event that aims to unite people in the fight against the worldwide cancer epidemic, the Cancer Society said.
