Many around the island have been coming together to show their support for the people of Ukraine and this Sunday so too will the Indian community as it pledges funds from the annual Holi festival towards humanitarian efforts there.
Shilpa Tagalpallewar Gampawar, organiser of the event and member of the Indian Community Group, said as the community gathers to celebrate the festival of Holi their thoughts and prayers will be with the people of Ukraine.

“Holi is a festival of colours so every year we play colours for a different cause. This year also we are playing colours to fill a little happiness in someone’s life who may need it,” she told the Cayman Compass via text, adding, “As Indians we believe in the concept of ‘Vasudhaiva kutumbkam’ which means the world is one family and naturally if one of your family members is in need of help, you stand for them.”
The event is being held at Dart Park, South Sound from 11am to 2pm on Sunday.
Holi is the festival of colours and is held in India to mark the beginning of spring as well as the triumph of good over evil.
Tagalpallewar Gampawar explained every year the Indian community invites residents to join in the celebration and share in the culture and traditions of the festival.
She said she is hopeful residents will join with them for a good cause.
“We are here to help Ukraine cope with the humanitarian crisis due to invasion by Russia. Together we can make a difference. One CI dollar equals 36 Ukraine dollars. The profits from the festival will go to efforts there,” she said.
Tickets are available now at both branches of Stop and Shop in George Town and at Health City Cayman Islands through Dr. Smita Almeida or Dr. Jyoti Jadiyappagoudar.
