Daubed in rainbow-coloured paint, children and adults alike enjoyed the annual Holi celebrations hosted by the local Indian community group on Sunday afternoon.
The festival event, now in its fifth year, was held at Dart Park and saw roughly 150 people join in the festivities to mark the start of spring in India.
Holi festival organiser and local artist Shilpa Tagalpallewar Gampawar said Holi is also known as the festival of colours, festival of love and festival of spring.
It is an annual celebration that is “seen as a new beginning where people can release all their inhibitions and start fresh”.
“As a artist I love to play with colours on canvas,” she told the Compass on Tuesday, adding that it was a healing and stress-relieving pastime and this had inspired her to emulate the Indian celebrations in Cayman.
Tagalpallewar Gampawar said Holi is an ancient tradition that not only marks the end of winter, but also honours the triumph of good over evil.
“On the behalf of Indian Cayman community I love to share and celebrate our Indian ancient culture, tradition and festival where everything has a meaning and long story behind it. I was so happy to see crowds and celebrate with over 150 people and children,” she added.
The event also featured Indian food and Bollywood dance music.
