Powder of all hues rained down on revellers last weekend, as the local Indian community hosted its sixth annual Holi celebration at Dart Family Park in South Sound.

Holi, which is the Indian festival of colours that welcomes in spring, is celebrated around the world.

Local artist Shilpa Tagalpallewar, who organised the 24 March celebration, said she was pleased with the turnout as the event continues to grow; this year 200 people joined the festivities.

“[Holi] is new beginning because it falls in Spring and as an artist I love to sharing our colorful festival with all other nationalities here in Cayman. We can celebrate our festival, share our culture and traditions and come together with dance and food… so we can spread love,” she told the Compass via WhatsApp.

Tagalpallewar said the event raised $500, which will be split between Cayman’s National Council for Voluntary Organisations and the Nanddip Foundation in India.

“I personally believe that everything has to be done with a purpose or a good thought in mind… this is our colors for a cause and we made it,” she added

She thanked everyone who supported the event, adding that next year will be bigger, suggesting that it could be an “Indian food festival with colors”.

The 24 March event also featured Indian food and Bollywood dance music.
