John Gray High School retained their crown against 10 other schools at the 2022 Inter-Secondary School Sports Championships at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

Taking second place, was Clifton Hunter High School, followed by Cayman Academy in third.

The event, which took place 22-24 March, featured performances from CARIFTA qualifiers like Jerrell Maize and breakout talents like John Gray’s Calvin Taylor, who won the 12-and-under shot put event on day two with a throw of 11.42 metres.

Taylor’s throw caught the attention of national head coach Kenrick Williams, who offered him an invitation to train under his track club HyTech Tigers.

There were also standout performances from the highly touted sprinter Aaliyannah Anderson, who won her four separate events, including all of the heats.

Ministry of Education Chief Officer Lyneth Monteith told the Cayman Compass after the event that she was pleased to see athletes seize their opportunities during the championships.

“Coming out of COVID, this event was a little iffy [on] whether it would happen or not,” Monteith said. “So, certainly to be able to host the meet… is a tremendous feat for us and I think that it bodes well for the athletes. I’m really appreciative of the organisers that pushed on and got this done.”
