The official funeral of the late Benson O. Ebanks will be held at 3pm on Friday, 8 April, the government has announced.
Ebanks, who served as an elected representative of West Bay for more than three decades, passed away on Tuesday, 29 March, at the age of 87.
This morning, following a ceremonial lowering of the Cayman Islands flag to half mast outside the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue, attended by members of the family, the official lying-in-state began at the House of Parliament.
At the lying-in-state ceremony, which will continue until 2pm today, senior government officials paid their respects.
A government press release stated that members of the public are invited to file past the coffin.
A vigil party from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service will watch over the proceedings.
Following the lying-in-state, a hearse carrying the late statesman will travel from the House of Parliament throughout West Bay, beginning at 2:30pm.
His funeral will take place Friday at the John Gray Memorial Church in West Bay, located near the four-way stop.
Road closures will be occurring to accommodate the lying-in-state ceremony and the funeral. Police said Fort Street will be closed today between Albert Panton Street and Edward Street from 1:45pm to 2:40pm. On Friday, West Church Street will be closed between West Bay Road and Elizabeth Street from 11:30am to 5pm.
