As Cuba struggles to recover from being struck by Hurricane Ian on Tuesday, a Cayman Islands church has begun accepting donations to help people in need on that island.
The All Nations United Pentecostal Church is appealing to the Cayman community for donations of non-perishable food, clothing, medications and hygiene products.
Cuba is still reeling from the impact of Ian, which was a Category 3 hurricane when it hit the island, leaving at least a million people without power.
A number of protests across the island were reported this week as the power outages continued.
The Associated Press reported that demonstrations had been held in the capital, Havana, in the town of Surgidero de Batabanó, and in the city of Cárdenas, and state security forces were deployed to quell the unrest.
Donations welcome
Amanda Wilson, secretary of the All Nations UPC’s disaster relief committee, said in a statement that the hurricane had been devastating for Cuba, and she hoped the Cayman community will come forward to give a helping hand.
Donations will be flown by the church to Cuba and will be distributed through contacts in churches there, she said.
Earlier this month, Wilson said, the church took medications to Cuba. The church also partners with NGO Compassion Service International, which provides humanitarian aid in times of disasters.
Items that are being requested for donation include non-perishable food, personal hygiene items, and clothing in good condition.
Wilson said basic non-prescribed medications, mostly anti-itch lotions, are also welcome as with water being cut off in some areas, skin infections and irritations are common.
The deadline for donations is 12 Nov., she said.
The donations can be dropped off at the All Nations United Pentecostal Church, 23A Woodlake Drive, in George Town, where Bishop Dolbert A. Clarke is the pastor.
