Sommelier Standoff returns for Season 7

After every round, the competing sommeliers go around the room to discuss their wine choices with diners.

The Sommelier Standoff competition, created by Jacques Scott and hosted at Agua Restaurant, is starting its seventh season on Thursday, 6 Oct.

Each season is held over multiple months, with one dinner a month bringing two sommeliers face-to-face to do battle. They must pair wines with four dishes, and the diners choose which wine they feel pairs best with the meal. Votes are counted after each round, and if there is a tie after four courses, the competitors immediately go to a blind tasting sudden death situation.

There is a reception with bubbles before everyone heads indoors for the main event.

Adam Slobodian of Jacques Scott won Season 6 with a score of 3-1 over Gustavo Varela Rojas of the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort. Slobodian subsequently won US$2,000 and a bottle of Penfolds Grange, courtesy of Treasury Wine Estates; a five-night stay at Rickety Bridge Country House from Rickety Bridge Winery; an WSET level 3 course in wine/spirits or sake from Wineschool3 by Christian Esser; and the Sommelier Standoff trophy.

Anyone who appreciates good food, great wine, and a really fun night out should consider getting tickets for the heats. What makes it such an entertaining evening is the fact that it is so interactive for the audience. You do not have to be a wine connoisseur in order to participate.
