When chef and world traveller Anthony Bourdain died in 2018, the shock reverberated around the globe. From Vietnamese street food vendors to a family table in Iran, very few people were untouched by the news.
Cayman was no different. The enigmatic celebrity had been an annual guest and presenter at The Ritz-Carlton’s Cayman Cookout, where he would share stories of his experiences in the kitchen and enjoying meals in locations far and wide.
Supporters of the Cayman Food Bank have now organised a number of events over three dates – 1-3 Nov. – designed to not only celebrate Bourdain’s life, but also to raise money for the non-profit.
There will be two opportunities to see the ‘Roadrunner’ documentary at Camana Bay Cinema. Tickets will also include attending an exclusive live interview with Michelin-starred chef Eric Ripert, along with the option of dinner at Blue, hosted by Ripert.
Naomi Law of the Cayman Food Bank said that all proceeds from the events will benefit the organisation, which is currently supporting over 500 families each week.
“[We are] entirely privately funded by the generosity of the community, but with the rising cost of living, the donations are not as consistent as we need to keep helping [people]. Donations are urgently needed… ,” Law said.
After becoming famous as the bestselling author of ‘Kitchen Confidential’, Bourdain reached a much wider audience of fans with his shows ‘Parts Unknown’ and ‘No Reservations’. He often spoke of how food brought people together from different countries, beliefs and religions, creating common ground and conversation. He changed perceptions about war-torn countries the likes of Haiti, Iraq and Lebanon, where he often found their people to be some of the most welcoming and generous he had ever encountered.
The hope is that those attending A Celebration of Anthony Bourdain will be moved to be equally generous, and donate to this local cause which provides nourishment to those in need.
Tickets for The Roadrunner Experience are $150 to attend a viewing of ‘Roadrunner’ on either 1 Nov. or 2 Nov. at 7:30pm at Camana Bay Cinema, and include the live interview with Eric Ripert on 3 Nov. at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, running from 5-6pm with cocktail reception from 6-7pm. Tickets for The Parts Unknown Premium Experience are $1,500, which include all The Roadrunner Experience benefits, plus a multi-course dinner at Blue by Eric Ripert from 7-10pm, hosted by Chef Ripert.
