Regional and local weather forecasters are urging residents to monitor a broad area of low pressure off the coast of Guyana that continues to develop as it slowly drifts into the central Caribbean.
This system poses no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.
In its 8am weather update, the US-based National Hurricane Center warned that the tropical disturbance would likely develop into a tropical depression and/or storm by Sunday morning.
“A broad area of low pressure over the southeastern Caribbean Sea is producing a large area of disorganised showers and thunderstorms extending from the Windward Islands west-northwestward for several hundred miles,” said the NHC in its forecast.
The NHC added that if the system continues to drift into the central Caribbean, it would likely encounter favourable conditions.
“Regardless of the development, locally heavy rainfall is possible over portions of the Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico through this weekend,” warned the NHC.
Local forecasters at the Cayman Islands National Weather Service, who have been monitoring the weather system, have also urged residents to keep an eye out for further storm development.
Farther north, another weak disturbance is churning near Bermuda. However, forecasters say that system is likely to dissipate in the coming days.
