Hurricane warnings have been issued for Florida and the northern Bahamas as Tropical Storm Nicole continues to strengthen as it heads directly towards those areas.

This storm poses no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.

In its 3pm forecast issued on Tuesday, 8 Nov., the US-based National Hurricane Center warned that Tropical Storm Nicole was now generating maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour, 10mph shy of a Category 1 hurricane.

“Hurricane conditions and a dangerous storm surge are expected in portions of the northwestern Bahamas on Wednesday,” warned the NHC.

Current storm projection tracks suggest Nicole is expected to travel in a westerly direction across the northern Bahamas and directly over central Florida, and then veer towards the north before weakening to a tropical storm.

However, the sheer size of the storm has caused forecasters to urge residents not to pay strict attention to the projected path.

“Do not focus on the exact track of Nicole since it is expected to be a large storm with hazards extending well to the north of the center, outside of the forecast cone,” said the NHC. “These hazards are likely to affect much of the Florida peninsula and portions of the southeast United States.”
