The development of subtropical storm Nicole has caused regional forecasters to issue severe weather warnings for the northern islands of the Bahamas and parts of Florida.
The system poses no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.
In their 2pm weather update, US-based National Hurricane Center forecasters warned that although Nicole was still a tropical storm it was likely to produce hurricane-force winds across parts of the Bahamas and Florida by Wednesday, 10 Nov.
“A dangerous storm surge is possible across portions of the northwestern Bahamas, much of the east coast of Florida and portions of coastal Georgia,” warned the forecasters.
As of Monday afternoon, Nicole was located east of the Bahamas, and was drifting in a westerly direction. Storm-projection paths indicate that forecasters expect the storm to become a Category 1 hurricane by 8pm on Wednesday, 11 Nov., at which time it is expected to have made landfall in the Bahamas and Florida.
Although Nicole is not expected to directly impact the Cayman Islands, local forecasters say showers are still likely to develop around the Cayman area.
“Light to moderate northeasterly winds and slight seas will continue across the Cayman area for the next 24 hours as Subtropical Storm Nicole moves west near the Bahamas,” said the Cayman Islands National Weather Service.
