US National Hurricane Centre forecasters have said a system over the central Caribbean Sea is likely to develop into a tropical depression by early next week.
The NHC, in an advisory Saturday afternoon, said the broad area of low pressure over the central Caribbean Sea continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
The system has a high chance of development through the next five days at 70%, while there is a medium, or 50% chance, of development through the next 48 hours.
At this time it does not pose a threat to the Cayman Islands, however the Cayman Islands National Weather Service issued an active Tropical wave alert about the system.
It also urged residents to monitor the developments of the system. NWS said it will be providing updates on any forecast change and what that would mean for the Cayman Islands.
In its advisory, the NHC said environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for gradual development over the next few days, and “a tropical depression is likely to form by early next week while the disturbance moves west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph over the central Caribbean Sea”.
It said an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is currently investigating the disturbance.
“Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is possible over portions of the Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico through this weekend,” it said.
