As the Cayman Islands recorded its 35th death due to COVID-19 complications, new Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nick Gent has called on the public to make use of the booster programme that has commenced.

In a statement on Friday night, the Health Ministry reported that an individual who had received two doses of the vaccine, no boosters and had severe comorbidities, had died.

The person died Thursday, 27 Oct., the Health Services Authority reported.

Five people passed away in September.

Those individuals had “severe comorbidities.”

One unvaccinated person with COVID on the Sister Islands, who also had severe comorbidities, was among the five that died.

In the statement, Gent stressed the importance of the vaccination and getting the booster doses, especially for the elderly and immunocompromised.

“The Moderna (bivalent) booster is on island, and I encourage our elderly and immunocompromised, as well as their caretakers and healthcare workers, to get boosted as it has been said often, research has shown us that the two doses of the vaccination in conjunction with the recommended booster doses will keep people out of the hospital, so I stress once again: get vaccinated and boosted,” he said.

The Health Ministry reminded that COVID-19 reports to the public will be limited to hospitalisations and deaths, however, any notable increases in hospitalisations, as well as any new deaths, will be announced to the public immediately.
