A person with what health officials described as “severe comorbidities” has become the fifth COVID-related death to be reported in the Cayman Islands this month, and the second in a week.
This brings the total number of people who have died with COVID-19 in Cayman to 34.
The Health Services Authority, in a statement, confirmed the latest death on Friday, 30 Sept., stating that the person had received two vaccine doses and one booster.
Last Friday, the HSA said an unvaccinated person with COVID on the Sister Islands, who also had severe comorbidities, had died.
Interim Chief Medical Officer Dr. Autilia Newton said in the statement, “It is imperative that we continue to use all the resources at our disposal to protect ourselves and our loved ones from severe illness and death from COVID-19, and our best resource continues to be the vaccine.”
She added, “Research has shown us that the two doses of the vaccination in conjunction with the recommended booster doses will keep people out of the hospital, so I stress once again: get vaccinated and boosted.”
Since last month, health officials in Cayman no longer issue weekly reports on COVID numbers, but do issue immediate updates when there are notable increases in hospitalisations and any new deaths.
