Students and teachers learned about the rocks, coral reefs and plate tectonics of the Cayman Islands at the recently concluded Geology Week.
Geologist Brian Jones, a professor at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta, Canada, who has been visiting and conducting research in Cayman for more than 35 years, once again led the events.
The week-long series, which ran through 28 Oct., included a lecture and field trip to local sites of geologic interest on Grand Cayman, for teachers and professionals, as well as lessons to high school students at Cayman Prep and High School, Cayman Academy, Hope Academy and Layman E. Scott High School.
The topics covered included plate tectonics, the rock cycle, coral reefs and the geology of the Cayman Islands, according to a press release by Water Authority-Cayman, which, along with Jones, sponsored the week of activities.
Water Authority director Gelia Frederick-van Genderen said she hoped the lectures would motivate young people in Cayman to study geology.
“We are so grateful to Dr Jones for returning to the Cayman Islands to share his expertise with local teachers, professionals and students,” she said in the release.
“Geology is essential to the day-to-day operations of the Authority, as well as to the success of its major infrastructure projects. I hope that Dr Jones’ lectures will inspire young people in the Cayman Islands to pursue geology as they progress in their educational and professional careers.”
