A world-renowned geologist from Canada is bringing his expertise back to Cayman this month as part of Geology Education Week.
Brian Jones, professor emeritus of geology at the University of Alberta, has been conducting research in the Cayman Islands for 40 years.
He will be visiting to lead the Water Authority’s programme – taking place from 9-19 Oct.
The event will feature geology lessons for high school students and a professional development course for educators, including a field trip to sites of geological significance.
Jones will lead a public lecture titled ‘Geology and Water: Cayman Islands’ on Wednesday, 11 Oct. at 6pm at Cayman Brac Beach Resort and on Thursday, 12 Oct. at 6pm at the National Gallery in Grand Cayman.
Participants will be able to ask questions and order his book ‘Geology of the Cayman Islands’, which is a comprehensive review of his decades of research.
Light refreshments will also be provided.
Hendrik van Genderen, Water Authority water resources engineer, said Jones is world-renowned.
“He brings a wealth of knowledge and specific local expertise, and we are pleased that he can share this knowledge with the public,” he said.
Jones has a long and distinguished career in sedimentary geology.
Since the early 1980s, he, along with his colleagues and students, have conducted scientific geological research throughout the Cayman Islands.
This work has resulted in the training of numerous doctoral and master’s degree students and over 100 scientific papers in various academic publications and scientific journals.
It also has made a significant contribution to the work of the Water Authority, Department of Environment, National Trust and the private sector.
At his book launch earlier this year, he said, “When I made my first trip to the Cayman Islands in 1982, I did not expect that I would still be visiting the islands 40 years later.
“The geology is complex and has given my colleagues and I such great opportunities.
“The Cayman Islands have been very good to my students and I in facilitating our research. Over the years I have met and worked with so many wonderful and helpful people here.”
