The government is inviting unemployed Caymanians to sign up next week for the National Community Enhancement project, known as NiCE, a three-week temporary programme to assist people who are out of work in the run-up to the holiday season.
Registration will be held from 9am until noon on Monday, 21 Nov., at the Lions Community Centre, 905 Crewe Road, George Town.
The Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure announced the NICE project will take place from 28 Nov. to 16 Dec.
According to the ministry, the project “will provide a stipend to unemployed Caymanians and spouses of Caymanians, ages 18 and over who volunteer in a number of areas, including the beautification and maintenance of roadside, parks, cemeteries and beaches”.
The ministry confirmed that, as in previous years, workers will receive a stipend of $10 an hour, while supervisors will receive $12 an hour.
Last year, more than 600 people participated in the winter seasonal programme.
Minister Jay Ebanks said in a statement, “Given the economic challenges some of our people are experiencing, and the additional financial strains of the holiday season, it is good we can provide this opportunity for them at this time.”
He added, “The NiCE project since its inception has ensured that Caymanians and residents benefit from a clean and healthy environment. The Ministry will continue to partner with the public and private sector in delivering the programme to provide solutions and improve the well-being of our people in keeping with Government’s broad outcomes.”
How to apply
Applicants who attend the single registration event at the Lions Centre on Monday are required to bring proof of their immigration status. This could be photo identification and voter card, birth certificate, passport, Caymanian status certificate or stamp in valid passport for Caymanians.
Spouses of Caymanians will be required to show photo identification and a Residency with Employment Rights Certificate or a stamp in a valid passport.
Application forms for the NiCE project will be available at all district libraries, Members of Parliament offices, Needs Assessment Unit, Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman and the public reception desk at the Government Administration Building. The forms will also be available on registration day at the Lions Centre.
