Stride Against Cancer hits the road

More than 1,300 people ran and walked along West Bay Road on Sunday morning at the annual Stride Against Cancer, which is the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s main fundraiser.

Young and old, four-legged and two-legged, walkers and runners took part in the event, which consisted of a half-marathon and a quarter-marathon, beginning at Seven Mile Public Beach and turning around at the Wharf restaurant to double back to the beach.

Those who completed the course passed through a red finish-line arch and then through a giant inflatable colon – brought on island by the Lions Club of Grand Cayman to help educate people about colon cancers.

Shorline Blanchard, acting operations manager at the Cancer Society, said she was delighted with the turnout, and thanked the walkers, runners, volunteers and sponsors for making the event another success.

As well as the larger event along West Bay Road, a Mini Stride was also held on Sunday in North Side.

The final participation figures and total raised at both Strides are still being tallied, Blanchard said.
