Amid ongoing political tension and after the turmoil of the 2021 elections, Opposition Leader Roy McTaggart says the Progressives party is readying itself to contest a minimum of 15 constituencies at the polls.
McTaggart, speaking last week on the Cayman Compass weekly talkshow ‘The Resh Hour’, said with the PACT administration at its midpoint, his party will be turning its attention to gearing up for elections.
He added that, given the current climate following the departure of Deputy Premier Chris Saunders, “The Progressives red machine is always in action and always active”.
He said he is hopeful Premier Wayne Panton and the remainder of his team can hold together, as the Progressives are looking forward to a 2025 poll because it gives them two years to prepare.
The year before the elections, he said, things will start to heat up.
“We are going to see new faces in the Progressives. In 2021, we did not [contest] a majority of seats and despite the agreements that we had with a number of independents who promised to work with us and help us form a government…. they double-crossed us and didn’t follow through on the commitments. So I would be looking for us to contest a majority of the seats… at least 15,” he said.
McTaggart said if the party can get 19 candidates, they will contest every seat.
“I would love to have that happen, that’s my goal and my aim,” he said.
However, he said 15 seats would be enough to give the party a majority in the elections.
McTaggart confirmed he will be running in 2025, subject to internal party elections, among other matters.
“I will certainly be asking the people of George Town East to return me to office in 2025,” he said.
He said as the term stretches on, the community will see people starting to come out and declaring their candidacy.
“Politics and election fever will start to gather steam some time in 2024. So I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
