With the completion of the Department of Environmental Health bulk waste collection exercise, officials are reminding the public to not to litter and to take their waste to the landfill for proper disposal.
Preliminary figures from the DEH indicate that over 600 tons of bulk waste were collected over the last four weeks across all three islands during the annual campaign.
DEH Director Richard Simms, in a press release issued Monday, said that this is a significant figure, considering that the previous bulk waste exercise took place only six months ago.
“We sincerely appreciate the efforts made by residents to comply with the guidelines provided and the dates scheduled for their respective communities. This has also facilitated a greater preparedness by reducing the amount of debris that could be generated by any form of severe weather,” he added.
The DEH, in its statement, reminded residents that following the completion of its bulk waste collection on 27 May, arrangements should be made by individuals to transport any additional waste to the landfill.
“Any illegal dumping and littering should be reported to the DEH or the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS),” the DEH said, adding anyone carrying out this “unlawful practice” is liable on conviction to six months imprisonment and a minimum fine of $500.
The George Town landfill operates from 7am to 5pm on weekdays, until 1pm on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays. The landfill drop-off facility at the gate will remain accessible to the public and small vehicles 24 hours a day.
