Junior and senior athletes hit the track and field at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex for the Cayman Islands National Championships on 16-17 June.

Among the competitors at the event were Caymanian collegiate standouts Rasheem Brown and Olympian Shalysa Wray, who will be representing Cayman at the Central American and Caribbean Games, scheduled for 23 June to 8 July, in San Salvador, El Salvador.

One of the highlights during the national championships was three-time Olympian Kemar Hyman getting edged for first place in the men’s 100-metre finals on Friday.

Alex Gordon, 19, of Speed Athletics Club, advanced from the preliminary round as the second seed behind Hyman but when it mattered in the finals, Gordon delivered the shocker of the evening.

Gordon ran 10.72 seconds to win gold, ahead of Hyman, who clocked in at 10.82 for silver.

It was the first time that Hyman, who holds the 100m national record at 9.95 seconds, had been beaten by a fellow Caymanian in the sprint race in over 10 years – perhaps symbolising the dawn of a new era.

Speaking with the Compass at the event, Hyman admitted that his glory days have passed and said retirement is near. However, the 33-year-old noted that he will continue training in hopes of qualifying for his “final” Summer Olympic Games next year.
