Man imprisoned for manslaughter caught smuggling ganja into jail

Sean Michael McDonald, who is serving a seven-year sentence for a boat collision that claimed the lives of two people, has now been charged with smuggling ganja into Northward Prison.

McDonald, 40, appeared before the Summary Court on Tuesday, 18 July, to answer one charge each of smuggling contraband, possession of ganja with intent to supply and simple possession of ganja related to an incident in January.

“This is an interesting case, in that he was found with ganja at the prison on the same day his bail was revoked and he was taken into custody following his sentencing in the Grand Court,” said Chief Magistrate Valdis Foldats, who dealt with the matter.

Foldats noted that recently there have been similar cases where people being processed into prison have been found in possession of ganja.

McDonald was sentenced to seven years and one month in prison for two counts of manslaughter and one count of endangering human life through a reckless and negligent act, following a judge-alone trial in August 2022.

The charges stem from a boating collision on the night of 11 Aug. 2019 that killed John Turner, 70, a British resident of Cayman, and former RCIPS officer Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Brown, 49, and seriously injured Brown’s partner.

No pleas were entered and the matter was put back until 8 Aug., at which time McDonald is expected to make another appearance via video link.

  1. I wonder if he was given a Blood Test immediately after the boating accident/fatality, to test whether he was under the influence of Alcohol or narcotics? Perhaps this was a contributing factor?
