Students learned all about how to code from expert speakers and guest instructors during Code(Cayman)’s first summer camp in July.
The non-profit, which provides free software-coding instruction and mentorship, is hosting three sessions to ensure Caymanians play a key role in the growing tech ecosystem.
B1, a technology-focused investment firm headquartered at Camana Bay, sponsored the first camp at the Code(Cayman) Tech Lab at the Grand Pavilion on West Bay Road.
Thirteen students aged 13 to 17 learned about coding scripts, emerging tech careers, AI advancements, trading and economics, and transforming their passions into innovative, problem-solving start-ups, according to a press release.
The camp culminated with students creating and marketing their own computer programmes to a panel of industry experts.
Brandon Caruana, co-founder of Code(Cayman) and CEO of Cartan Group, said in the release, “Our students learn the skills and receive the support they need to join high-potential tech companies, achieve great outcomes, and go on to start their own companies that we expect to ultimately turn Cayman into a globally competitive island of innovation.”
One of the guest speakers, André Ebanks, Minister for Investment, Innovation and Social Development, said Code(Cayman) demonstrates the power of community fellowship.
“[This takes place] as tech leaders across our society work creatively and collaboratively to drive our innovation forward and enhance the lives of all Caymanians, now and in the future.”
Code(Cayman) summer students received a Raspberry Pi coding computer as part of their participation.
They were also given access to a support network of fellow students, alumni and volunteers to promote their ongoing leadership development and enthusiasm for acquiring new skills.
Since its inaugural Women.Code course in 2019, Code(Cayman) has expanded its offering and provided more than 30 in-person programmes to Cayman residents.
Nearly 800 students have participated, and more than 60 local leaders have volunteered.
Minds Inspired, Dart’s education initiative programme, sponsored the second session, which concluded on 21 July.
Walkers is sponsoring the third session, which will run from 14-18 Aug.
Both of the latter sessions cater for students aged 10 to 13.
