The Christmas breeze has arrived, thanks to a cold front passing over the Cayman area which will last into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

In the 6am weather advisory, forecaster Allan Ebanks noted that temperatures would rise to the low 80s degrees Fahrenheit and drop to the mid-70s by nightfall, thanks to northeasterly winds of 15 to 20 knots with higher gusts.

“Cloudiness and showers associated with a cold front over the Cayman area will linger for the next 24 hours as the front becomes stationary this afternoon,” advised Ebanks. “Further north, a high-pressure system over the southeast United States will support fresh northeasterly winds and rough seas across the Cayman area for the next 24 hours.”

As a result, the NWS has issued a small craft warning for vessels to exercise caution over open water.

The NWS says weather conditions associated with the cold front are likely to last until Sunday morning.

Further south, a weakening tropical wave passing through the central Caribbean may produce isolated showers over the Cayman area as it dips south towards Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

The system does not pose any immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.

According to the US-based National Hurricane Center, the system is producing disorganised showers and thunderstorms, which should arrive over Jamaica later tonight, Thursday, 2 Nov.

“Development, if any, of this system, is expected to be slow to occur before it moves inland over Central America on Saturday,” the NHC advised in its 8am forecast. “Regardless of development, this system has the potential to produce heavy rains over portions of Jamaica through tonight and across Central America by Friday and over the weekend.”

The NHC said the system has a 20% chance of development within the next 48 hours, as well as through the next seven days.
