Caymanians interested in pursuing technical and vocational careers now have the opportunity to receive a grant to further their studies at local institutions.
Education Minister Juliana O’Connor Connolly, in a press release issued Thursday, announced the introduction of the Local TVET Grant, saying it represents government’s “unwavering commitment to invest” in technical and vocational education and training programmes and increase awareness of their significance.
“[The grant] ensures that Caymanians have equal opportunities to access high-quality TVET courses, opening doors to fulfilling careers and enhancing their contributions to our society,” she said.
Valued at up to $15,000 per year, the Local TVET Grant covers tuition fees, course materials, and required equipment for eligible courses lasting 18 months or less, offered by registered local private institutions, according to the release.
The initiative is designed to equip Caymanians who have already completed their compulsory education with the essential skills and training they need to succeed in technical and vocational careers.
“Unlike many other scholarship programmes, the TVET Grant supports education outside the traditional academic calendar by facilitating applications throughout the year,” Ministry of Education Acting Chief Officer Lyneth Monteith said in the release.
“This demonstrates that we [the Ministry] acknowledge the diversity of learning pathways and the dynamic nature of the job market. We encourage individuals to seize this incredible opportunity to unlock their full potential and pursue rewarding careers in TVET fields.”
The Local TVET Grant application process provides approved Caymanian students access to funding toward TVET courses/programmes at registered local private TVET institutions in the Cayman Islands that are not currently accessible through academic scholarships offered through the Scholarship Secretariat.
Applicants can go to the Scholarship Secretariat’s website to fill out the form for the grant.
The administration of the grant will be overseen by a committee appointed by the education ministry, and decisions regarding grant allocation will be announced quarterly.
