The ascent of Juliana O’Connor-Connolly to the office of the premier and the forming of the United People’s Movement from the remains of the PACT coalition, marks the end of a turbulent week in politics in Cayman.

Ignited a week ago with the resignation of West Bay West MP McKeeva Bush from the PACT government, a contentious no-confidence vote in Parliament soon followed that saw the motion fail to secure the two-thirds majority needed to pass, yet laid bare Wayne Panton’s and PACT’s survival as untenable.

The new coalition faces a mounting list of challenges, with immediate attention expected to be directed at finalising and passing its budget before the end of the year.
