Caymanian student tops Dean’s List at UWI

Brianna Bodden

Caymanian Brianna Bodden was among those students named to the Dean’s List and Honour Society of The University of the West Indies for the 2022/2023 academic year.

Bodden, 22, a recipient of a Ministry of Education scholarship, is in her fourth year of the bachelor of medicine and surgery programme at the UWI Mona campus.

She was placed on the academic Dean’s List for the faculty of medical sciences, in recognition of excellent performances in all professional/core courses for 2022/2023.

Bodden finished at the top of her class, which comprises more than 200 students, at the end of her academic year, and subsequently also became a member of the Honour Society.

She has been on the Dean’s List every year since her enrolment at the university in 2020.

“Academic excellence has always been a personal goal for me from my childhood years and my support system has always encouraged the importance of education and hard work,” Bodden told the Compass. “Being placed on the Dean’s List for the past three years has been a privilege [for] me as I am able to inspire others and prove to myself that medical school, though challenging, can be manageable.”

She added, “I am especially grateful for what I would describe to be my “biggest accomplishment” thus far, placing at the top of my class for the last academic year.”

For Bodden, while medical school has not been without a few challenges, “I must attribute my success to God, who has been with me every step of the way; my family and friends; and discipline when I lack self-motivation.”

She hopes to pursue the field of interventional cardiology after graduation.

“I think my biggest competition is myself, as I am always striving for personal growth. It would mean the world to me to become the kind of doctor that my community deserves, one with empathy, competence, and passion.”

She added, “I have truly appreciated the saying that ‘medicine is the career where you never stop learning’, and my passion for science continues to grow as I rotate through the different subspecialties.”

Jerome McCoy, acting deputy chief officer at the ministry, said of Bodden’s achievement, “This is truly a remarkable accomplishment and is a testament to your hard work, passion, and commitment to your studies.”

McCoy, whose focus is on adult education, added, “We are all proud of you and wish you continued success!”

Bodden graduated from Clifton Hunter High School and attended sixth form at Cayman Prep and High School.

She was also recognised by the ‘Proud of Them’ programme, which honours young Caymanians who have demonstrated excellence in various fields.
