Prison officer arrested for smuggling ganja into jail

Senior prison officer Derron Watson was arrested on 28 Feb. for allegedly smuggling drugs into Northward Prison.

Details of the arrests were disclosed on Thursday, 29 Feb. in a brief joint press release from the RCIPS, Cayman Islands Prison Service and the Department of Public Safety Communications.

According to the release, the officer was observed smuggling contraband into Northward on Wednesday, 28 Feb.

Though Watson was not named in the statement, Cayman Compass sources confirmed that upon his arrival at the prison compound, he was confronted and searched by senior officials.

During the search, according to sources, an unknown quantity of vegetable matter suspected to be ganja was retrieved.

“The Prison Officer was subsequently arrested on suspicion of the offence of Smuggling,” the release said. “He was transported to the CI Prisoner Detention Centre where he remains in custody pending further police investigation.”

Watson, a senior officer who has worked at the prison service for more than a decade, has most recently served as an assistant manager.

His arrest comes several months after another prison officer was jailed for two years for smuggling ganja into the prison.
