The Cayman Islands men’s national team begins their road to the FIFA World Cup on Saturday, 8 June at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
The Cayman squad, ranked by FIFA at 196, will kick off action in Group A of the World Cup CONCACAF qualifiers against Antigua and Barbuda, which sits at 142.
“We have a young core of talented, driven players who are proud to represent their country. I expect big things from the players, and they do as well,” Joey Jap Tjong, head coach of the men’s team, said in a press release.
Cayman has earned one win and a draw against Antigua and Barbuda. Although the teams played one another in 1985, but there is no record of the score for that match.
Their last matchup, in 2008, during the CONCACAF Caribbean Cup, ended in a 1-all draw.
“Antigua & Barbuda is a strong side with several very experienced players,” Jap Tjong added. “We expect a hard-fought match and I’m looking forward to seeing how our players respond.”
The match, which is scheduled to start at 3:30pm, will also be live-streamed through CONCACAF. Jap Tjong encouraged the community to come out and fill the stands to support the home team.
“Be loud, be proud, be positive and let the players know you appreciate their efforts.”
