The Cayman Islands Men’s National Football Team travelled to Europe for their first-ever international friendly against Gibraltar’s national team.

While the match, hosted on Saturday, 6 June at the Europa Point Stadium, ended in a 4-1 defeat for the Cayman squad, the trip provided invaluable exposure to the team.

Under the guidance of head coach Colin ‘Dougie’ Rowe, Cayman struck early with a goal from Christopher Reeves in the first minute of the match.

At the 12th minute, Gibraltar answered back and equalised the game at 1-1. The second half proved more difficult for Cayman defensively as the hosts took control of the tempo and scored three additional goals to seal the 4-1 victory.

Reflecting on the early execution within the first minute, Cayman’s captain D’Andre Rowe said, “We came out with a game plan for the first half to get an early lead in the game, which we did.”

“However, in the second half, we got sloppy on the ball defensively and didn’t take care of the ball like we did in the first half which led to the second half result,” Rowe added.

Despite the match outcome, the 25-year-old highlighted the takeaways from the opportunity to compete against European opposition.

“The main lesson from this game was gaining more experience and building more chemistry amongst one another. Gibraltar is a team that plays against some of the top teams in Europe and playing against a team of that stature will only elevate our team,” Rowe noted.

“I’d say we showed progress in all areas despite the final score line. We are a young upcoming team, and we still have a lot more to learn,” he explained.

Looking ahead to future international friendlies, Rowe said, “Adding more key players to the current squad is one area that I would want to see focused on.”

He added, “The Cayman squad that went to Gibraltar wasn’t the strongest due to players being unavailable, so it’s just about regrouping with everyone now and preparing for the upcoming games later on in the year.”
