The Cayman Islands Postal Service has pointed to a scam involving delivery services that is circulating in the Cayman Islands.

These scam texts claim that a package with an incorrect address is awaiting shipment, then prompt the receiver to click a link to update the address so it can be resent.

Melissa Martinez-Ebanks, deputy postmaster general, confirmed this scam has been circulating, with the sender falsely identified as the Cayman Islands Postal Service, as well as DHL, FedEx and other delivery organisations. The scammer then requests the target’s personal information.

“We do not contact our customers and request that information via text message,” she told the Compass.

Typically, the postal service will contact customers about any legitimate shipping issues through a provided phone number or email and require them to come to a nearby office.

“We would not ask for information to be returned in that medium,” she said. “We would ask them to come make any corrections in person.”

Martinez-Ebanks said the scam appears to be widespread. She has personally received one such text.

She urged anyone who may have compromised their personal data through this scam to contact the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

The postal service has referred several people to the police and recommends that victims show police the scam message before deleting it and blocking the number.

“They definitely should not ever provide banking information through those links,” she advised.
