Cayman Islands residents are preparing for the imminent arrival of Hurricane Beryl, a major storm expected to pass south of the islands between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
Beryl could bring devastating hurricane-force winds, life-threatening storm surge and damaging waves to Cayman, according to forecasts from the National Hurricane Centre.
Residents rushed to board windows, secure homes and find elevated parking for vehicles, in hopes of avoiding the brunt of flooding.
The government issued a ‘stay in place’ notice for residents after 6pm, in an effort to prevent unnecessary accidents and issues during the storm.
Residents are advised to remain in their place of shelter this evening, lock doors and windows and to follow official updates.
As of 1pm, Beryl was located 320 miles east-southeast of Grand Cayman and was moving 18 mph west-northwest near the south of Jamaica.
