Camana Bay streets were filled with a colourful spectacle of brightly feathered costumes, rhythmic dancing and music as some 125 young revellers took part in the inaugural CayMAS junior and teen parade on Saturday, 13 July.

The grand procession of five bands, led by Radiance Dance Studio, kicked off in the afternoon, making its way through the heart of Camana Bay. The CayMAS JT parade included bands from Edna Moyle, Joanna Clarke and Red Bay primary schools. There was also a CayMAS Open band for kids who wanted to participate but their school wasn’t in the parade.

Families and spectators lined the route, cheering and dancing with the mas bands and grooving to the sounds of Caribbean and soca music.

The Crescent Fountains at Camana Bay proved the perfect backdrop for the crowd who gathered following the parade for a dance showcase of the participating bands.

The Red Bay Primary band won the costume competition, edging out Edna Moyle by one point, with Joanna Clarke placing third.

Jermaine Sharpe, chairperson of the CayMas board and the CayMas JT committee, told the Cayman Compass the inaugural event was a “resounding success”.

“I would like to especially thank the committee [for] the hard work they did for the months leading up to this. We wanted to create an event that stood out and was memorable for the participants as well as the spectators.”

He added, “We are striving to create the next generation of lovers of carnival. We think we have gotten off to an amazing start as we already have people who want to register for next year.”
