The Cayman flag will fly for one last time at the Olympic Games in Paris, Monday.
After a valiant effort over four days, Charlotte Webster will sail her final two races to conclude team Cayman’s competition at the global spectacle.
Webster has already completed eight races in the Bay of Marseille, France and will look to finish strong after a tough few days.
Unfavourable weather conditions proved difficult for the top Caymanian sailor who won’t advance to the medal fleet, no matter the result on Monday.
The top 10 boats from the opening series of dinghy races will reach the finals, based on their scores accumulated through 10 races.
Webster, finished her race eight on the series on Sunday, 8 Aug., placing 43rd. Earlier in the day, she had her best performance of the competition, placing 32nd, ahead of 11 sailors.
On Saturday – the most labour intensive day – Webster raced three times after a pair of postponements over the first two days. She put together a 40th-place finish in race six, after placing 36th in race five and 41st in the opener.
Friday, 3 Aug., featured Webster sailing twice, finishing 40th and 39th-place. A third race was set for Friday but was abandoned just when it started to look like Webster was going to have a breakout performance, nearly sailing into the top ten of the fleet in 16th place.
“Today was a pretty long day,” Webster said on Friday. “Again, we started three races and it was, again, a very shifty course and the wind wasn’t doing what it was forecast to do, which made it difficult.”
“I did have some good moments in the races, but it was very close and results-wise I didn’t do how I wanted to.”
She opened competition on Thursday, making her Olympic debut, finishing 41st in her first of the 10 scheduled races.
Though the sound of wind and waves was Webster’s reality sailing over the last four days, cheers from the the screens in Cayman have been plentiful for the nation’s four representatives.
But a large group of supporters for Webster was in France, including her mother Pamela Webster who wrote on her Facebook, “Tiny country = big support Team.”
Webster will compete in her ninth race at the Olympics on Monday, at 5:15 am (Cayman time). Race 10 will commence later in the day. Both races will air on NBC, Peacock and NBCOlympics.com.
