Cayman’s National Weather Service says it is monitoring a system located in the eastern Caribbean which is expected to develop slowly, bringing rains near the end of the week.

The system is producing showers and thunderstorms near the Windward Islands; however, those conditions have become less organised since yesterday, the US National Hurricane Center said in its Monday advisory.

National Weather Service meteorologist Gilbert Miller, responding to Cayman Compass queries on the system on Monday, said there have been “large swings” between the weather models when it comes to the exact area of development.

“The latest output [is] showing slow development through 7 days. What is consistent across the models are the rainfall figures of between 1 to 1.5 inches over the Cayman Islands mainly on Friday and Saturday,” Miller said.

He said the National Weather Service is monitoring the system “regardless of development” and will ensure Cayman gets the most up-to-date information as it progresses.

The National Hurricane Center, in its Monday advisory, said any development of this system should be slow over the next couple of days while it moves westward over the eastern Caribbean Sea.

“Environmental conditions are expected to become more conducive for development later this week as the system moves across the western Caribbean Sea or the southern
Gulf of Mexico,” the NHC said.

The system has a 10% chance of formation through the next 48 hours and a 30% chance through the next seven days.
