Joshwa Campbell – the man responsible for the goal that earned Cayman’s historic World Cup qualifier victory – intends to create more magic at the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League.
Cayman defeated Antigua and Barbuda 1-0 in June – marking the first time that Cayman’s senior men claimed victory in a World Cup qualifying fixture – prompting fans to storm the pitch in celebration.
Now with Cayman scheduled to kick off their group stage matches in CONCACAF Nations League on 4 Sept., Campbell, 18, a freshman at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will look to find the back of the net once more in the stadium where he delivered Cayman’s most notable win to date.
However, he told the Compass he doesn’t feel anxious heading into next month’s game against the British Virgin Islands.
“I don’t feel no pressure, I know what I am capable of and what my teammates are capable of, and I just want to make my country proud,” he said.
Campbell, who began playing football when he was 4 years old, noted that of all the sports he tried, including track and field and basketball, he loved football. His ambition is to play professionally in the English Premier League.
“My goal in the future is to become a professional player and my dream team to play for is Chelsea as I am a supporter,” he said.
‘A new era’
But first things first. Campbell said he believes the upcoming CONCACAF competition will favour Cayman in what he considers a fresh chapter for the sport coming off their big win in June.
“I do feel like this is a new era in Cayman football. I said it before the Antigua and Barbuda game, and I still do believe it.
“I think we have a strong side and good coaches which will help us be successful and advance in the group.”
Cayman footballers will kick off group stage gameplay against British Virgin Islands on Wednesday, 4 Sept., and will return three days later to face St. Kitts and Nevis.
Both matches are scheduled to be played at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, beginning at 3:30pm.
