The Cayman Islands men’s national team returns to action next month for the CONCACAF Nations League, with hopes of building on their historic win in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Cayman footballers will kick off group stage gameplay at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex against British Virgin Islands on Wednesday, 4 Sept.
The last two games between Cayman, which currently sits at 195 in the FIFA rankings, and BVI, ranked 207, both ended in 1-1 draws.
Cayman will return to their home pitch three days later to face 146th-ranked St. Kitts and Nevis – a nation the locals haven’t opposed since 1991, with that game also ending in a 1-all draw.
The teams will play each other twice, with Cayman playing their last two games away during the Nations League tournament.
“We look forward to getting back out on the pitch and having the chance to face quality opponents in front of our home crowd,” said Alfredo Whittaker, president of the Cayman Islands Football Association.
Games for all three Leagues (A, B, and C) will be played across three upcoming men’s FIFA match windows (September, October and November 2024), followed by the CONCACAF Nations League finals in March 2025.
Cayman’s last-minute goal secures historic World Cup qualifier victory
Locals fans have reason to be excited about the national team’s fortunes after Cayman’s triumph in June, thanks to a last-minute header by Joshwa Campbell.
Now with two upcoming games against opponents that favour the nation’s on paper coupled with a home crowd advantage, the momentum will no doubt be on the side of the Cayman team.
Whittaker added that the game against BVI will again demonstrate the behind-the-scenes efforts to improve the team.
“This competition allows us another opportunity to show the talent we have in Cayman and how we’ve come together as a team,” he said.
Both matches are scheduled to begin at 3:30pm.
