In the latest in a spree of armed robberies, a masked man wielding a steel pipe as a weapon held up a store on Stadium Drive, West Bay, Sunday afternoon.
Police said officers responded to the robbery report shortly after 3:30pm.
The robber, whose face was covered with a black shirt, brandished the pipe and demanded cash, police said. He then fled the scene, carrying the cash register.
As he ran away, “he was confronted by members of the public in the vicinity of Scholars Park, and then fled north, leaving the register behind but taking a quantity of cash”, police said.
They added that the suspect appears to have left the scene in a white Honda Fit.
The robber is described as being of “chubby build and light complexion”, and wearing a long-sleeved light-coloured shirt and long black pants.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact West Bay CID at 949-3999. In addition, tips can be provided to the RCIPS confidential tip line at 949-7777 or via its website. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Cayman Crime Stoppers website or by downloading the Cayman Crime Stoppers app.
Sunday’s hold-up was the latest in three reported robberies in recent days, none of which however involved guns.
Earlier on Sunday, around 1:45am, a woman was robbed of her backpack by two masked men outside an apartment complex in Sound Way, George Town, and on Saturday night, a masked man armed with a machete held up a service station on Bodden Town Road.
Another robbery had occurred on Friday afternoon, when a masked man, armed with a machete, made off with cash from the Tortuga liquor store in Heritage Square, West Bay. A 28-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with that robbery.
