Two- and four-legged walkers, joggers and runners were out in force Sunday morning for the annual One Dog Jog, which raises funds for Cayman’s One Dog At A Time.

Caroline Johnston, president of the animal charity, said, “Around 55 humans and 40 furry friends attended, raising $1,500.”

She added, “We couldn’t save as many four-legged friends as we do without our supporters. We are raising money to purchase land and property to hold the first kennel-free sanctuary for our dogs with an educational facility and therapy pool.”

The organisation currently has 86 puppies and adult dogs in its care or with foster homes.

One Dog At A Time was set up 13 years ago, and in its first year, it took in four dogs. Last year, it rescued 226, highlighting the ever-growing issues of abandoned or unwanted animals in Cayman.

Johnston said some dogs are surrendered to her, some are transferred from the Department of Agriculture kennels, while others are rescued from the streets.

The charity tries to rehouse the animals locally, or send them to homes overseas, usually in Tampa, Florida, or Nova Scotia and Toronto in Canada, with some also going to the UK.

“We currently need short-term foster homes for our dogs flying abroad,” Johnston said. “We always need people flying on Cayman Airways to escort our dogs to Toronto, Nova Scotia and Tampa. We need at least a week’s notice of the flight date and we can send two dogs per person.”

So far this year, less than two weeks into 2026, the charity has rescued 12 dogs.

Along with nine of the charity’s foster dogs at Sunday’s event, there were several other rescue dogs that had been rehomed from One Dog At A Time or the Cayman Islands Humane Society.

“A massive thank you for all whom participated in our leisurely jog,” Johnston said. “It was so lovely to see so many of our dogs that have found their forever homes raising money for our current fur-babies.”
