Nearly five decades of swimming tradition continued in Cayman Brac as about 50 athletes dove into the 25-metre short course pool for the 48th annual George Anderson Memorial Sprint Meet.
Organised by the Sister Islands Swim Club and hosted by the Lions Clubs of Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, the event took place on 2 May at the Cayman Brac Sports Complex located on The Bluff.
The meet carries the name of the late Lion George Anderson, an educator at the former Cayman Brac High School and someone the clubs described as a passionate advocate for swimming and lifelong learning.
Swimming to victory
Competition was divided across primary, high school and community relay divisions, featuring students from Creek and Spot Bay Primary School, West End Primary School and the various houses of Layman E. Scott High School.
In the primary school division, West End Primary School secured the championship title, while Hurricane house emerged victorious in the high school division, outperforming Northwester and Tradewinds houses.
Individual accolades were presented to several athletes for their performances throughout the day.
Amaia Johnson and Mason Bodden were named the Champion Girl and Boy for the primary school division, while Joshaela Burke and Caden Falcon took the Champion Girl and Boy titles for the high school division.
Erastus “Atuz” Labitad was also recognised as the meet’s Outstanding Swimmer.
The winning team of the Community Relay Race, a highly contested segment of the programme, was led by Sister Islands Swim Club coach Adrian Falcon.
Following the event, coach Falcon said, “Standing at poolside watching our young athletes compete with such fire and determination, I, as the swim coach, couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride alongside every parent in attendance.”
“[The event] reminded me why we practice regularly and push through tough sets – these swimmers demonstrated not just skill, but grit, and heart,” Falcon added.
Falcon emphasised the importance of such meets in promoting swimming proficiency and confidence among youth in the Sister Islands.
“When a community rallies around its youth like this, the results are awesome to witness. I am already looking forward to even more participation from all schools next year,” Falcon said.
Looking ahead, a selected team of swimmers is scheduled to travel to Grand Cayman to compete in the Lions Club of Grand Cayman Sprint Swim Meet on Saturday, 9 May.
