Seventeen Cayman Aquatics Development Team swimmers attended a two-day training camp in Cayman Brac, bringing together athletes from the Sister Islands and Grand Cayman.
The camp, held from 3-4 May, saw the swimmers take part in a series of intensive sessions hosted at the 25-metre pool on The Bluff.
Under the leadership of technical director of Cayman Aquatics Jacky Pellerin and a team of four coaches, the athletes focused on essential technical disciplines, including stroke technique, starts and turns, race preparation and breath work.
“The camp also served as a valuable development opportunity for the coaches, who collaborated closely throughout the weekend, sharing knowledge and strengthening their approach to athlete development,” said Cayman Aquatics.
“Athletes from the Sister Islands Swim Club were also invited to participate, adding to the sense of unity and excitement across the programme.”
Danielle Jeffries, a coach from Seven Mile Swimmers who assisted with the camp said, “What a memorable weekend in Cayman Brac! Coaching the National Development Camp was such a rewarding experience. We spent our time diving into the specific technical skills and little “tricks of the trade” that will help these kids handle the intensity of training and competing at a higher level.”
She added, “The real highlight, though, was seeing athletes from four different swim teams put their club rivalries aside and act as one single, cohesive unit. Overall, it was an amazing experience to train [in] Cayman Brac with the Sister Islands Swim Club and interact with all of these kids and fellow coaches.”
Other participating swim clubs included Camana Bay Aquatic Club and Stingray Swim Club.
Beyond the time spent in the water, the group also took part in a “brief island tour” designed to encourage team bonding and “creating a well-rounded experience” for the athletes, said Cayman Aquatics.
Following the success of this year’s camp, Cayman Aquatics plans to establish the development camp as an annual event.
