Teams gathered under the intense Cayman heat to wrap-up in finals matches for the 2026 Harneys’ Gaelic Football League.
After kicking off in February, the league wrapped up its season with final matches at the Cayman International School field on Saturday, 27 June.
In the Women’s Championship, Sarsfields lifted the trophy after edging past Harps with a 2-6 (12) to 1-5 (8) victory.
Sarsfields captain Taylor Wyatt said, “It was a good game, but a really tough match. It was super hot, so it was tough on both teams. We just had to keep going, and the girls played really well. Honestly, I just think that everyone showed up and played their best, so it was great.”
The Men’s Championship title went to Éire Óg, who defeated Western Gaels 0-8 (8) to 0-5 (5).
Danny Santiago, team captain for Éire Óg, said his team knew the match “wasn’t going to be easy”.
“[Western Gaels] are a quality side, so we knew it was going to be tough. We haven’t scored a lot of points all season, so we knew it was going to be a bit of a war of attrition, but I think all year long we kind of had the same strategy,” Santiago said.
“There are a lot of good footballers on this team with a ton of experience including national team players and ex-champions, so I think it was just a matter of trying not to do anything special. We just had to play our game, have good hand passing and defence, stick with what we have and know. That’s been our strategy all season,” he added.
In the Teapot divisions, where teams battle for the unique honour of lifting actual teapots as trophies, the Women’s Teapot final saw Bredagh dominate Buffers Alley with a 6-7 (25) to 0-1 (1) victory while the men’s side saw Cavan Gaels claim the title by defeating Cú Chulainns 5-13 (28) to 2-11 (17).
Cavan Gaels captain Tom Clark noted, “There were [a lot] of scores on both sides, but we just ran away with it in the last 10 minutes. It was extremely hot, so people were struggling towards the end, but we’re happy to get the win.”
For many of the players, a six-week training block is currently underway as several male teams and one female team prepare for a national trip to Boston next month for the USGAA North American Finals from 14-16 August. The local league will reset in late January of next year.
