Juliana O’Connor-Connolly promised to fight for a minimum $5,000 a month salary for teachers in a rousing first speech as Cayman’s education minister that was greeted with a standing ovation Tuesday morning. The majority of teachers are paid between $3,500 and $4,800 per month, according to a 2011 government report.

A new primary school in Bodden Town is not part of government’s immediate plans and is not needed at this stage, based on projections for likely student numbers in the near future, Education Minister Tara Rivers told legislators last week.

Building contractor McAlpine has been hired to complete the sports hall at the new John Gray High School site as government prepares to resume the mothballed construction project.
