As an educated and ambitious young woman, who has seen older female colleagues locked out of leadership roles, Jane is concerned that gender politics still plays an outsized role in Cayman firms.

This month the Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting will assemble in Nairobi, Kenya. It has taken place regularly since 1985, to take stock of the current status of gender equality in our member countries, and to share perspectives and experience of how progress on this important Commonwealth priority can be achieved more swiftly.

The Cayman Islands still has significant work to do to ensure gender equality in the workplace. A survey by non-profit organisation Gender Equality Cayman of more than 1,000 people who live and work on island indicates that Cayman lags behind other developed countries and that gender equality is not an issue frequently discussed by businesses.

Accounting and consulting firm Deloitte, which recently launched “ALL IN: Accelerating gender and inclusion,” a strategy designed to increase the share of women in leadership roles, has pledged its support to the local non-profit Gender Equality Cayman.

Cayman’s appointed body that considers complaints regarding gender discrimination has told government officials it does not need to explain its decision in 2016 that Her Majesty’s Prison’s Service discriminated against four male prison supervisors.
